Employee Spotlight Q&A – Bernadette Camilleri

Bernadette Camilleri
"For me, it’s all about the children. Since I was a child, I’ve always loved to take care of my siblings and younger relatives. I feel a huge affinity with children - their presence, smiles and looks make you feel that everything is okay."

  1. How long have you been with Apex Childcare Ltd?

I have been employed with Apex for around 8 years, almost since the beginning.

  1. What do you do at our company?

As Senior Child Carer, I take care of the children and their well-being by engaging them in free play and matching activities with their interests.

I carefully observe their behaviour so that if something needs to be brought to the parent’s attention, we promptly communicate it. We also encourage the children to develop their skills, such as fine motor skills and sensory awareness.

  1. What motivates you to wake up and go to work?

It fills me with great joy to welcome the children to the Childcare Centre. Their happy faces, attention, and honest and sincere hugs make each and every day special.

During their time at the centre, the children grow and learn, and this is noticeable especially in children who had been enrolled since they were babies. It is such a rewarding feeling to know that you have contributed to their development.

Sometimes, children who have started school still come back to visit. The parents are very grateful for the work that we do, which is so meaningful to us.

  1. What inspired you to work in this career?

For me, it’s all about the children. Since I was a child, I’ve always loved to take care of my siblings and younger relatives. I feel a huge affinity with children – their presence, smiles and looks make you feel that everything is okay.

  1. Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

I see myself still working with children, but I aspire to be in a managerial position in a Childcare Centre, whereby I can still be in the presence of children and keep on contributing and partaking in their needs.

  1. Do you have a word of advice for aspiring child carer students?

While there is a fun and playful part to child care, it’s crucial that their needs are recognized and cared for. This field of work requires dedication, patience, and love for children. Work exposure is beneficial to fully understand what the role entails and the different approaches to each age and stage, from baby to infant.
