What is Mental Health?

Mental health includes our psychological, emotional and social well-being.

It affects the way of thinking, feeling and acting. Ways of handling stress, making choices.

The factors that contribute to mental health problems includes:

  • Family history of mental health problems
  • Biological factors (brain chemistry or genes)
  • Life experiences (abuse or trauma)

How to look after your Mental Health?

Making simple changes in your life and living style doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take a load of time

  1. Keep active – it will increase your confidence that ‘you can do it!’, walking in the park, housework activities, gardening will as well keep you active, not only the physical activities
  2. Accept who you are – as many there is people around as many there is different characters, don’t wish you were more like someone else, good self-esteem will help you cope when life takes a difficult turn
  3. Drink responsible – some of people drink to deal with their fears or loneliness, but we all know that is just a temporary fix, drinking is not a good way to manage difficult feelings
  4. Take a break – change of pace or scene is good for your mental health, taking a break between your tasks (from cleaning, cooking, working) can be enough to de-stress you, you need some ‘me time’
  5. Ask for help as we are not a superhumans – if the things are not go the way that we planned we can get overwhelmed and tired, ask your family and friends for help, sometimes even if they just listen might change the way that you feel

 

 

 

Tips to boost your Mental Health

  • Relaxation exercises, mindfulness, meditation, prayer and improve your state of mind and outlook on life
  • Dance like a star! most of us like to listen to the music, why not to combine listening and moving to it? It will make us happy and will bring a lot of positivity in our life
  • Splash and swim – being in the water will make you feel refreshed, relaxed as the water takes your weight
  • Experiment- try a new recipe, Pinterest project, paint
  • Take time to laugh – watch a comedy or check out cute videos online, laugher helps reduce anxiety
  • Keep your bedroom cool for a good night’s sleep
  • Set up a gateway, camping or trip, planning a vacation or something to look forward to, can boost your overall happiness
  • Treat yourself with a couple pieces of dark chocolate every few days- flavonoids, theobromine and caffeine are thought to work together to improve mental skills and alertness
  • Focusing on the positive things as much as possible
  • Yawn! – studies proved that yawning helps cool the brain and improves alertness and mental efficiency
  • Organise mini SPA – once a week treat yourself with a bath, add some aromatic oils, lit some candles, relax and enjoy
  • Include Omega – 3 fatty acids into your diet, they are linked to decreased rates of depression
  • Feeling stressed? Smile! Sometimes it is not easy thing to do, but smiling can help to lower your heart rate and calm you down
  • Plan something with your friends and family
  • Enjoy 15 minutes of sunshine, sunlight synthesizes Vitamin D which is a mood elevator
